Die Sankt-Helena-Medaille wurde 1857 vom französischen Kaiser Napoleon III. für die Teilnehmer an den Napoleonischen Kriegen (1792-1815) gestiftet. Mit ihr wurden nicht nur Franzosen sondern auch Soldaten der verbündeten Staaten geehrt. Der Crailsheimer Georg Leonhard Geier (1791-1865) hatte 1812 als württembergischer Wehrpflichtiger am Russlandfeldzug Napoleons I. teilgenommen
